Going Green With Camelbak’s Better Bottle™
Camelbak is best known for its hydration packs, which is
what put the company on the map and remains its primary business. Nevertheless,
the company has also expended into a lot of related fields as well, offering a
number of different products, though the emphasis remains on hydration. Among
these other products is the Better Bottle™ line of reusable water bottles. This
line of water bottles comes in three different sizes: 0.5 liters, 0.75 liters
and 1.0 liter. Further, there are a number of different types, such as
stainless steel versions and various lids that are better for different uses.
All of the Better Bottles™ are completely free of Bisphenol A (BPA) and phthalates.
BPAs are commonly included in plastics and have been linked to a number of
health concerns, especially related to obesity, thyroid disorders, cancer, and
neurological problems. Many national health agencies – including the American
Food and Drug Administration – have issued reports about the dangers of BPAs
and some countries have even banned the use of baby bottles containing them.
Camelbak’s Better Bottles™ use a proprietary material known as Tritan, that
contains no BPAs. The bottles can be machine washed, can hold hot beverages;
all without leaching any chemicals into the beverage. The bottles have been
independently tested and shown to exceed the standards set by the U.S. Food and
Drug Administration, the European Community standards and those set by the
Japanese Ministry of Health and Welfare.
Most of the Better Bottles™ are spill proof, due to the
unique lid designs offered. The basic bottle comes with the patented Big Bite™
valve system which contains no moving parts, meaning the water is directly
accessible with a simple bite and sip, with no tilting required. Further this
basic lid is spill proof, even if the bottle is left opened and knocked over. The
bottle is also available with a less advanced classic cap, but the Big Bite™
version does not cost much more, so is a better value. The cap is also
standardized to fit the most common sizes of bottles, so it can be used with
other bottles.
The Better Bottle™ line has been so successful; they were
used at the fifteenth annual global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark
in December, 2009. The use of the bottle was meant to emphasize support for
reusable, BPA-free water bottles as opposed to disposable cups and water
bottles. The bottles used at the conference were especially commissioned by the
U.S. Climate Action Network. The Bella
Center, the hosting venue
for the conference, used more than 750 of the bottles during the conference.
The use of the bottles at the Climate Change
Conference was only the most recent of several international efforts by
Camelbak to affiliate with local authorities and see the end of disposable
water bottles. For example, Camelbak is now working with the city of Bundanoon, Australia
to make it the world’s first municipality free of disposable water bottles.
Similarly, Camelbak has worked with the city government of Sonoma, California
to replace all government usage of disposable water bottles with reusable
Better Bottles
