An Overview of the CamelBak Omega Reservoir
The defining characteristic of any hydration pack is the reservoir, the container that holds the water. The overall value of the entire hydration system is only as good as the reservoir and CamelBak has truly established itself as the industry leader due to the high quality of its various reservoir systems. In particular, the Omega line of reservoirs has been smashing success for years and they constantly add new improvements to the Omega reservoir each year, means that newer ones – even of the same basic product line – have a number of improved features over older models. Coming in six different sizes, ranging from 35 ounces to 100 ounces, the CamelBak Omega reservoirs remain the most popular hydration pack reservoirs on the market. Obviously the most important feature of any reservoir is its durability as a leaking reservoir is utterly worthless and defeats the entire purpose. Further, since most hydration packs are intended for use under challenging physical conditions, the strength and durability of the reservoir has to be considerably better than simply a water-tight plastic bag. Camelbak has been aware of this from the outset and even the older models, those lacking many of the improved features of newer models, have an excellent reputation for durability. Generally speaking, the CamelBak Omega reservoirs do not develop holes or leaks without a deliberate effort to puncture them. Some users, hikers in particular, even use the reservoirs as sitting cushions when they stop since the reservoirs are easily tough enough to handle this use. Further, the company stands behind its product, offer a full lifetime guarantee of the durability of their Omega reservoirs. One of the key problems with many of the older reservoirs was that they had very small openings, which complicated filling them – especially if you wanted to add ice – and made cleaning them a real challenge. In response to the many complaints of this nature, Camelbak responded by adding the large, screw top opening that are standard on all the Omega reservoirs today. These openings make both filling the reservoir – even with ice – very easy and have made cleaning them out incredibly simple. In fact, with the large openings, most people can fit their entire hand into the reservoir in order to clean it more thoroughly. Another later advancement related to cleaning was the treatment of the reservoirs with HydroGuard™. HydroGuard™ inhibits the grown of microorganisms like molds, fungus, and bacteria and also makes cleaning the interior of the reservoir easier. Another key complaint about the older reservoirs was that the water frequently had a “plastic” flavor, which many users did not like. In response, CamelBak came up with HydroTanium™ treatment. This is a proprietary treatment formula that is applied to the inside of the reservoir and is designed to insulate the water from the plastic interior, resulting in fresher tasting water. Plainly no water held in any sort of container can taste “fresh” all of the time, but the HydroTanium™ treatment has significantly improved the water flavor. While some people still make this complaint, most of these complaints relate to much older models that never underwent the HydroTanium™ treatment. Copyright Zarro Webmaster@liquidpacks.com
