A Bit About the Camelbak UnBottle

Camelbak has been the global leader in selling hydration packs and related gear for years and its reputation for unparalleled quality is fully upheld with the Camelbak UnBottle. Winner of Backpacker Magazine’s Editor’s Choice Award in 2002, the UnBottle has been a perennial favorite for years and remains one today. This particular bottle system is designed primarily for hikers and backpackers and is meant to be fitted into a larger overnight backpack as opposed to being warn separately like many of their other products. Although designed for backpackers, the UnBottle has also been popular with people engaged in water sports as it straps easily to most personal flotation devices (PFDs) and kayaks.

Although the UnBottle comes in larger sizes, the most common is the seventy ounce (or two liter) size. The key element of the UnBottle is the OMEGA™ HydroTanium™ Reservoir, which is easy to access and easy to clean. Further most of the modern versions of this reservoir include HydroGuard™ which is an anti-microbial protective agent that retards the growth of mold or fungus in improperly cleaned reservoirs. Very tough and durable, most users have had nothing but positive things to say about the reservoir. The only real drawback is that the reservoir often twists as it is emptied, but this really only takes a minute to correct.

The external casing provides excellent insulation keeping the water (or other liquid) cool in the heat and warm in the cold very effectively. The reservoir itself can be used in any of several different Camelback products, so the outer covering is the primary feature that distinguishes the UnBottle from other hydration systems offered by Camelbak. Made from modern synthetic fibers, the external casing is designed to be both light weight and resistant to abrasion. Nevertheless, at least some hikers have considered the external casing to be too heavy to comfortably fit within their packs and have opted to remove the reservoir from the external casing.

Measuring 17.5 in x 7.25 in x 0.5 in (445 mm x 184 mm x 13 mm), it is important to make sure that the Camelbak UnBottle will fit into your larger backpack comfortably before purchasing one. In most cases this has been the case, but some packs are short vertically to accommodate the UnBottle comfortably so you should be aware of this before buying the product. However the external casing does include a full series of D-rings, which means that it is easy to strap the UnBottle to the exterior of your pack if you are so inclined.

Almost all reviews of the Camelbak UnBottle have been positive and this product, being both high quality and reasonably priced, has served as a good introduction to the wider range of Camelbak products. Do keep in mind that this hydration system is primarily designed for hikers and mountain climbers, so it may not be the best option for people in other sports.
