A Bit About the Camelbak Cleaning Kit
One of the ongoing struggles confronted by people using hydration packs and related hydration systems has been the effort to keep the reservoir clean and free of microbial growth. Though this is particular true for people that put substances other than water in their hydration packs, it applies to water-only users as well as fungus and mold spores almost inevitably get into the reservoir sooner or later. In earlier times, the effort to keep the reservoirs sterile and clean was one of the major challenges to owning these hydration systems and one of the primary complaints. However, today things have become much easier.
Of course today most Camelbak reservoirs are treated with HydroGuard™, which is a anti-microbial agent that slows the growth of molds and fungus. Further, unlike many of the earlier reservoirs and bladders, most now have much wider opening allowing the owner to fully access and clean the insides thoroughly. Nevertheless, keeping the bladder or reservoir clean can still be trying. Though many people have fund their own improvised ways and means of comprehensively cleaning these hydration systems – many of which can be found online – the manufacturer also offers a number of tools to help their customers keep their systems clean and free of microbial growth.
For a fairly reasonable price, Camelbak offers the Camelbak Cleaning Kit. This includes a primary brush that is specifically angled to access all the nicks and corners of the reservoir or bladder and whose bristles are designed to not hurt the inside. Using a brush whose bristles are too hard can damage the inside of the container wearing it out faster and running risk of making it more susceptible to punctures or slow leaks. The Camelbak Cleaning Kit also comes with a second brush that is specifically designed to thoroughly clean the inside of the tube that runs between the reservoir and the mouth valve. This tube in particular required a good cleaning as it represents the key threat of backwash – including anything growing in the user’s mouth – affecting the system.
Besides the two brushes, the Camelbak Cleaning Kit also includes cleaning tablets that were specifically designed to work with Camelbak bladders and reservoirs. These tablets retard the growth of microbial life forms and also help improve the taste of the water (or other liquid) contained therein. Quick acting, it only takes about five minutes to use the cleaning tablets and provides a through cleaning that does not negatively impact the reservoir.
Further, the Camelbak Cleaning Kit includes the two piece Camelbak Dryer system. This includes one piece that is designed to suspend both the bladder and the drinking tube, allowing them to drain and dry thoroughly. The second piece fits inside the bladder, holding it open and allowing air to circulate throughout the interior for a complete drying. While other people have developed their own alternatives, such as using a coat hanger, many of these run the risk of puncturing or otherwise damaging the bladder, whereas the Camelbak Dryer offers no such threat.
